How to install rim locks?

Nov. 12, 2019

It’s easy to install rim locks. You can install rim locks by the following steps:

First, install the keeper. The keeper of the rim lock should be fixed to the door jamb directly. Put the keeper at a proper height. Put the keeper on the door jamb and use a pencil to mark the screw holes. You can screw in the keeper accurately by doing this. Screw in the keeper by using a screwdriver in order to make the keeper fixed to the door jamb directly. As long as a keeper is installed, it can be used to align the lock body’s position.

Make sure that a latch is in the proper direction before installing a rim lock body, because a rim lock has two directions.

If a latch doesn’t face the right direction, a rim lock body should be opened up and a latch should be flipped over. Remove and then turn over a latch, reattaching a rim lock body.

When a keeper and a lock body are aligned, use a pencil to make positions of the doorknob spindle, the screw holes and the keyway. Drill holes for the keyway and the spindle. Screw the lock body to the door after the holes have been drilled.

Attach a doorknob and its spindle after the lock body is screwed in.

A doorknob should be insert to a lock body and push it through the hole which was drilled. Screw in the escutcheon plates for the door knob and keyway on the exterior part of the door. Connect the exterior part of the doorknob to the spindle. Enter the set screw if possible. Check your rim locks to see if it is working properly.

Please note that it’s better to use rim locks for interior doors rather than exterior doors. Installing rim locks on the entry door will cause security problem for your house, which is something you would like to prevent. And it’s better to call a locksmith if you need help with installing rim locks.
