What is Zamak?

Zamak is also known as Zamac which is composed of zinc and alloying elements of magnesium, aluminum, and copper. The Zamaks alloys were developed in 1929 by the New Jersey Zinc Company. Zamak 3 is the most common Zamaks alloy. Zamak 3 and 5 are often used for the spin casting industry.

Application

Zamaks alloys can be used for locks, handles, automotive parts, bathroom fixtures, zippers, mirror frames, etc.

Standards

Every country defines zinc alloy composition differently, and you can see the following table for more information.

Zinc alloy standards in different countries

Country Zinc ingot Zinc casting
USA ASTM B240 ASTM B86
Canada CSA HZ3 CSA HZ11
Australia AS 1881-SAA H63 AS 1881-SAA H64
Europe EN1774 EN12844
International ISO 301
Japan JIS H2201 JIS H5301

Zamak 3

Zamaks 3 is the standard for other zinc alloys, and other zinc alloy compositions are based on Zamaks 3 which is composed of 96% zinc and 4% aluminum
